My Scholarship story Gene Grzywacz
Return to:College Tips-College Scholarship
One of keys to achieving good grades is finding the time to study.
Unfortunately, when you start college the bills keep coming. When I
started college, I did qualify for student loans but did not
receive a Pell grant. Student loans only go so far and the mortgage
still needs to be paid and food still needs to be put on the table
I got a job with Professional Power Wash. It was a mobile truck
washing company that would travel around and wash tractor trailers
and other work trucks. The pay was not great but the boss was a
good guy and we would work 12 hours day, he called them "half" days.
I was able to get 48 hours of work in four "half" days. I was very
grateful for that job and was able to pay all my bills.
The problem was that I was in school the other three days a week. I
was too tired to study much after a 12 hour shift in the hot
Arizona sun. I started looking for scholarships. I came across a
local scholarship for computer majors at my college. That
scholarship was administered by the college.
I asked the financial aid office and the student life office on how
to apply and they said your name is automatically submitted when
you apply for financial aid.
I then found out that there was a tuition waver if you were in
student government and their board was haft empty. I became the
secretary of student government and they sent me a check for the
tuition that I had already paid. The funny thing was I also
received the computer award a few weeks later. I seemed odd so I
asked around and the advisor for student government said "I put
your name in, we try to save that scholarship for students that are
active at school."
I was able to cut down to working three days a week and it made a
huge difference in my life and ability to study. The point is that
many scholarships are available and that one scholarship can
lead to the next.
During orientation for nursing school a lady spoke of a program for
students living in Pima County. The program would pay your tuition
and would loan money interest free for living expenses. Every
student that I know of, that applied was accepted. Unfortunately,
many students did not bother to apply because they felt they would
not qualify. I strongly encourage you to apply to every scholarship
