How To Use Essay Writer-O-Matic

Basic Page layout

On the top of the page under the header is a series of links that when clicked open up a tool on the right hand side of the screen. Below the links is a box containing the "Working Copy Of Your Essay". You can type in this box or add text by using the tools that appear on the right hand side. Below the "Working Copy of Your Essay" is the paste box. Any outside text (such as from other websites or word documents) needs to be pasted in this box and then click the button that says "Move Text to Working Copy". Pasting directly into the "Working Copy of Your Essay" will break the export function.

WARNING:

If you are currently working on a essay do not navigate away from the page or your essay will be lost. When clicking on links or promotions I suggest that you 'right click' and choose new window or tab. The tools can and must be click in the normal manner. All tools should highlight yellow when hovered over, links that take you off the page will not.

Essay Writer-O-Matic Tools

Essay Information

This tool stores the name of your essay and other header information in APA format. Other formats to come.

Step 1) Fill in the Full Title of your paper. (in mixed case)

Step 2) Fill in the Short Title of your paper.-- The first three words of your title (in mixed case)

Step 3) Fill in your name and include your title if appropriate (PHD, MD etc).

Step 4) Fill in your affiliation. This would be your class, college or business you represent.

Sentence Bank

The Sentence Bank contains general purpose sentence templates.

Step 1) Find a sentence that suits your purpose and click on it to move it to the Working Copy.

Step 2) Change the key words in the sentence -- these are sometimes in all caps.

Step 3) Repeat.

Essay Bank

The Essay Bank contains essay templates in various styles and topics.

Note: The subject of the essay is not important. Select an essay that meets the format and style you need. You can and should use sentences from multiple essay templates.

Step 1) Find an essay that suits your purpose and click on it to make it appear.

Step 2) Find a sentence(s) that suits your purpose and click on it to move it to the Working Copy.

Step 3) Change the key words in the sentence -- these are sometimes in all caps.

Step 4) Repeat.

Reference Page

The Reference Page tool will format your references in APA Style. Other styles to come.

Step 1) Select citation type.

Step 2) Fill in appropriate boxes.

NOTES: With Article in Journal with Paginated by Volume DO NOT INCLUDE AN ISSUE NUMBER! If the source does not have a volume number or issue number leave that field blank. With Article in a Newspaper p. or pp. precedes page numbers for a newspaper reference in APA style. See: APA Style: Articles in Periodicals

Step 3) Select number of authors. see: APA style Authors

Step 4) Fill in the authors first and second initials if available followed by a period after each initial for example: H.J.

Step 5) Fill in the Last Name.

Step 6) Click on Save Citation. -- the Reference page citation and the inline citation (that you use in the body) will appear on the left hand side. You can either clip and paste these APA style citations into your paper or move on to the next step. Please note the citations are not sorted until export. Repeat steps 1-6 for each citation.

Personal Word/Sentence Bank

With The Personal Word/Sentence Bank you will never have to type the same word, phrase, name, term or sentence again.

Step 1) Enter word or phrase in box and hit enter to add to your Personal Word/Sentence Bank.

Step 2) Place your cursor in the appropriate spot in the working copy of your essay.

Step 3) Click on any of your words or phrases to move them to the working copy.

Saving Your Personal Word/Sentence Bank For Future Use

Step 1) Enter email and a pin into appropriate boxes.

Step 2) Click "Save Personal Word/Sentence Bank".

To Retrieve your Personal Word/Sentence Bank

Step 1) Enter email and a pin into appropriate boxes.

Step 2) Click "Retrieve Exisiting Personal Word/Sentence Bank".

Dictionary/Thesaurus

The Dictionary and Thesaurus offers definitions and synonyms to enhance your essay.

Step 1) Fill in a word in the box.

Step 2) Click "Search Dictionary".

Step 3) Be patient it may take a second or two.

Step 4) Click on any of the results to have them added to you essay. If a word is highlighted in your essay the word you clicked on will replace it.

You can also access the Dictionary/Thesaurus in two other ways. In Firefox if you double click in the working copy of your essay it will automatically search the dictionary for that word. With Internet Explorer you will need to highlight the word and click "Search Dictionary For Highlighted Word Above(IE)" link.

Essay Research

The Essay Research tool will help you expediate your research with links and search capability.

Export Document

Step 1) Click on Export Document Link.

Step 2) Choose save file to disk. This works much better than the open document option.

Step 3) Open your document in Open Office, Google Docs, MS Word or any word processer that can read RTF files.
